Training courses
Tier 3: Evaluation & interpretation
Evidence evaluation workshop for forensic face identification
What you will learn
This in-person workshop focuses on how forensic facial examination findings are evaluated, interpreted, and communicated, and how to ensure that conclusions accurately reflect the strength of the evidence in practice.
The course covers both qualitative and quantitative approaches to evidence evaluation, with a focus on developing robust, transparent, and defensible frameworks for decision-making.
Participants will develop:
Understanding of the principles of logic, balance, transparency, and robustness in forensic evidence evaluation
Knowledge of how cognitive bias can influence interpretation, and how case management processes can mitigate its effects
Understanding of descriptive evidence evaluation methods using verbal scales
Knowledge of quantitative approaches to evidence evaluation, including score-based likelihood ratios
Participants will also develop practical skills in:
Applying structured frameworks for evaluating morphological comparison findings
Interpreting and reporting results using verbal conclusion scales
Understanding the limitations and risks of both qualitative and quantitative approaches
Interpreting quantitative outputs and their implications for decision-making
Content
The workshop is delivered in person over two days and combines taught content with practical exercises using realistic case scenarios.
The focus is on ensuring that conclusions are appropriately supported by the evidence, and that the strength of evidence is not overstated in practice.
Prerequisites
Attendees should be confident in applying morphological analysis and comparison to uncontrolled facial imagery.
